The Dormitory by Michele Clement

“For years after graduating I dreamed about school. Sometimes I still do… It is as though all of the schools and summer camps that I’ve ever gone to have morphed into one complex dreamscape that has taken various forms over the years.

I wander through the hallways looking for my class. Sometimes the school is empty, sometimes it’s partially torn down with bare rafters and walls with the raw wooden planks showing beneath.

The original Anatomy Lesson series and this Dormitory addition is a combination of memories and dreams.

It’s about what happens after being shipped off on a bus bound to an uncharted destination with unknown rules where you are forced to navigate a mysterious hierarchy – the mixed sense of dread and excitement as you venture into a new world.

The scene is inhabited by a motley crew, a gathering of memories of friends, rivals and nemeses from different eras of my life. From the girl who pulled my hair in kindergarten to one that passed notes in class about who ‘liked’ who, the smart girls, the pretty girls, and the ones that didn’t quite fit in. I had a unique perspective on the situation. That was when I started to became an observer, a witness to life’s little details as they passed by

This observer aspect has lasted all of my life”. – Michele Clement.
